As the demand for globally traded agricultural commodities grow, forests around the world are removed to make room for the expansion of commodity crop production. Deforestation, often associated with commodity crop production, accounts for over 11% of the world’s total annual CO2 emissions, second only to the energy sector. Over the past 10 years there has been a multi-sector international effort to remove the impacts of deforestation from the supply chains of globally traded commodities. Large multinational corporations such as Nestle, P&G and General Mills have joined forces with conservation organizations like The Nature Conservancy, Rainforest Alliance and Conservation International to develop guidelines and reporting tools to take deforestation out of commodity supply chains and monitor and measure their progress in doing so. This presentation discusses the issues related to deforestation and supply chains, efforts and progress in removing deforestation from supply chains and the role of consumers in the process.
