ICGC is pleased to announce our co-sponsorship of the upcoming conference on “Democracy under Threat in Times of Populism and Racial Nationalism” on March 25-26, 2021.

This event is hosted by the Interdisciplinary Collaborative Workshop (ICW) on Democracy Under Threat at the University of Minnesota. The workshop is committed to public scholarship that bridges the boundaries between academia and the larger communities in which we live and work. There will also be an ICW workshop on “Sports, Race, Protest & Social Change” scheduled for April 2021.

ICGC will also convene a doctoral seminar in Spring semester 2021 with the same title as the April workshop on “Sports, Race, Protest & Social Change,” taught by Professor Douglas Hartmann, ICGC affiliated faculty member in the Department of Sociology. The seminar will be focused on the extraordinary race-based athletic activism that emerged in the United States and all around the world in the wake of George Floyd’s murder in Minneapolis in the summer of 2020. It will set this activism in historical context, evaluate its scope and significance, and begin to document unique local activists, angles, and issues.

These initiatives parallel the interinstitutional partnership grant awarded by the Hearst Foundation to ICGC together with partners at Morehouse College and Spelman College to develop a graduate school preparation initiative for underrepresented students at the three institutions. Speakers at the March conference will be from these institutions as well as other prominent colleges and universities.
