Dr. Rose Brewer Awarded Humanities Without Walls Grand Research Challenge
ICGC's affiliated faculty member Rose Brewer was recently awarded the Humanities Without Walls Grand Research Challenge on “Environmental Justice Worldmaking: Redistribution and Reciprocity for a Just Transition. “Environmental Justice Worldmaking” (EJW) centers ways that the humanities and humanistic social sciences can affect the just transformation of democracy.

ICGC Welcomes 2021 Cohort of Scholars
The 2021 ICGC Scholars, the 33rd cohort, will be welcomed into the community in Fall 2021, with orientation during the last week of August. The seven new scholars—each from different departments within five colleges and schools at the UMN—come from countries including India, the United States, Ghana, Venezuela, and Vietnam. We are excited to bring their energy, knowledge and voices for issues of social justice and global change to the University of Minnesota.

ICGC, in partnership with the Office of the Vice President for Research, supports collaborative and interdisciplinary research circles involving ICGC faculty and students. Our longest running research circle on “Subjects, Objects, Agents: Young People’s Lives and Livelihoods in the Global South,” started in 2013 under the leadership of three ICGC affiliated faculty: Deborah Levison (Humphrey School of Public Affairs), MJ Maynes (Department of History), and Frances Vavrus (Department of Organizational Leadership, Policy, and Development).
ICGC Slated to Co-Sponsor Upcoming Conference on "Democracy Under Threat in Times of Populism and Racial Nationalism" in March
ICGC is pleased to announce our co-sponsorship of the upcoming conference on “Democracy under Threat in Times of Populism and Racial Nationalism” on March 25-26, 2021. This event is hosted by the Interdisciplinary Collaborative Workshop (ICW) on Democracy Under Threat at the University of Minnesota. The workshop is committed to public scholarship that bridges the boundaries between academia and the larger communities in which we live and work. There will also be an ICW workshop on “Sports, Race, Protest & Social Change” scheduled for April 2021.

ICGC Welcomes UWC Virtual Fellows
ICGC welcomes three virtual fellows from the University of the Western Cape (UWC), South Africa in Spring semester 2021. Sam Longford (History), Phokeng Setai (Anthropology), and Lee Walters (Women’s and Gender Studies) hold virtual residencies with ICGC from January to May 2021. Our exchange program is made possible through a long-term collaboration.

An ICGC faculty-led research circles, "Socio-Ecological Interactions with Tropical Mosaic Landscapes," led by Jennifer Powers and Forrest Fleischman, has published a new article, "Pitfalls of Tree Planting Show Why We Need People-Centered Natural Climate Solutions," in the journal BioScience.
