Abstract: Drawing on ethnographic observation and in-depth interviews with the Peruvian movement of working children, this talk traces the complex dynamics of age-based power within a social movement committed to pursuing non-hierarchical intergenerational collaboration. I explore how this unique movement functions as an intergenerational democratic political community, examining how adults, adolescents, and kids make decisions, organize the movement’s activities, and influence each other. In doing so, I draw larger conclusions about the possibilities and challenges for contesting the accumulation of power and authority in the hands of older individuals.
