Cannibal Writes: Eating Others in Caribbean

and Indian Ocean Women’s Writings

Presented by Dr. Njeri Githire

Associate Professor of African American & African Studies

Abstract: In Cannibal Writes, I argue that while cannibalism remains a privileged trope repeatedly inscribed in Caribbean discourse, its prevalence in Indian Ocean writings has eluded critical notice owing to the remarkable scholarly neglect of the region in North American academia. I demonstrate that the use of cannibalism as a central motif in the works under scrutiny opens up privileged modes for mediating historical and sociopolitical issues.
