The Precarious Life of Black Bodies in the Age of Ferguson, Obama, and the Militarization of the Police

Presented by Dr. Rose M. Brewer Morse-Alumni Distinguished Teaching Professor Professor of African American & African Studies

Abstract: The events last month in Ferguson, Missouri (the shooting of unarmed black teenager Michael Brown; the tear gas St. Louis County tactical police used to disperse non-violent protesters; and the slogan “Hands Up, Don’t Shoot,” which circulated the web) have called attention, yet again, to the precarious life of black bodies in the United States. Far from simply being “a race issue,” Dr. Rose M. Brewer kicks off the Fall ICGC Brown Bag Series by giving a lecture and facilitating a discussion on how the militarization of the police in the age of Obama implicates us all.
